Key Personnel

Paul Spiegel, President

Mr. Spiegel is a founding partner of SCRE, a multi-faceted real estate firm.

Mr. Spiegel began his real estate career in 1982 as a salesperson with Edward S. Gordon Company, Inc. (Insignia/ESG, more recently acquired by CB Richard Ellis). While there, he was involved in investment sales, corporate tenant representation, and ownership representation.

During Mr. Spiegel’s career, he has negotiated hundreds of leases valued well in excess of $1.5 billion. He has represented numerous corporate and institutional clients: CIBC as a sublease agent for 65,000 sq. ft. at 245 Park Avenue; Citibank in its disposition of 115,000 sq. ft. at 330 Madison Avenue; The Sumitomo Trust & Banking Company in the expansion of its New York City headquarters; Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. in both the expansion of its branch brokerage facilities (throughout the Northeast) and numerous corporate transactions including a 575,000 sq. ft. Charles Schwab consolidation and planned relocation of its’ Market Maker in Jersey City, NJ. Other notable corporate clients have included AT&T, Tokio Marine Insurance, Chase Manhattan Bank, Monster Worldwide, and Mercer Consulting Group.

Mr. Spiegel has also served as a leasing agent for the following properties (partial list):

  • Plaza 10 at Harborside Financial Center, a 575,000 sq. ft. office building
  • 199 Water Street (One Seaport Plaza), a 1 million sq. ft. office building
  • 17 Battery Place, a 1.2 million sq. ft. office complex
  • 99 Hudson Street, a 150,000 sq. ft. office building
  • 360 Lexington Avenue, a 250,000 sq. ft. office building
  • 30 Cooper Union Square, 50,000 sq. ft. office building

Mr. Spiegel’s notable transactions in these buildings include a 150,000 sq. ft. sub-lease to Instinet Corp., a 101,000 sq. ft. sub-lease to Mizuho Bank at Plaza 10, a 60,000 sq. ft. lease with Chase Manhattan Bank in One Seaport Plaza, and a 270,000 sq. ft. renewal with American Express at 17 Battery Place.

Mr. Spiegel obtained a B.S. in Broadcasting and Film from Boston University and a Master’s Degree in Real Estate from New York University. He has served as a member of the Executive Committee of The Young Men’s Division of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

John Griffin, Executive Managing Director

Mr. Griffin, Managing Director, has been a broker at SCRE since 1990. Mr. Griffin’s career in real estate began with Cushman and Wakefield, where he managed 25 million sq. ft. of properties as vice president. In addition to managing a 25 million sq. ft. portfolio of Class-A commercial properties, during his tenure there, Mr. Griffin assisted key personnel in numerous landlord and tenant issues.

In 1980, he became President of Thermocycle, an energy conservation company with offices throughout the US, Canada, and the UK. After a successful career at Thermocycle, Mr. Griffin returned to commercial management and accepted the position of Director of Property Management at the Edward S Gordon Co., where he managed in excess of 25 million sq. ft. of Class-A office buildings. He later joined Bankers Trust Company as Managing Director of Global Real Estate. Mr. Griffin then became the executive in charge of the design and construction of CIBC’S 1 million sq. ft building at 300 Madison Avenue, completing the building on time and under budget by $56 million.

During 2008, 2009, and 2010, Mr. Griffin completed in excess of 500,000 sq. ft. of leases globally on behalf of an NYSE-listed mid-cap company that has close to 100 leases worldwide. Notable transactions completed on their behalf include sourcing between 5 and 700 jobs domestically into a 75,000 sq. ft. build-to-suit property in Florence, SC, and sourcing 350-400 jobs to a 5,500 sq. m. building in Brno, CZ. Other notable transactions would include a 28,000 sq. ft. data center in Boston, MA, a 6,000 sq. m. relocation in Seoul, Korea, a multi-city 10,000 sq. m. consolidation in China, and a 36,000 sq. ft. consolidation in San Francisco, CA.

One additional notable transaction is a 30-year 850,000 sq. ft. sub-lease between CIBC (Sub-Landlord) and Price Waterhouse (Sub-Tenant) at 300 Madison Avenue in New York City ($1.2 billion transaction).

Mr. Griffin obtained a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the New York Institute of Technology. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of Covenant House. Mr. Griffin also served as President of BOMA (New York Chapter) circa 1990.

Brian McCann, Managing Director

Brian McCann is a seasoned real estate professional with 50 years of property management experience. Prior to joining SCRE in December 2020 as an asset advisor, Brian McCann enjoyed a 36-year career at Cushman and Wakefield, Inc.

Brian McCann joined Cushman & Wakefield in 1984 as the Director of Engineering and Property Manager during the commissioning of 101 Barclay Street, New York, NY, a 1.2 million sq. ft. operations center for the Irving Trust Company. Mr. McCann was then chosen in 1988 to be the Property Manager for the new JPMorgan corporate headquarters facility located at 60 Wall Street, New York, NY. He was instrumental in commissioning this 1.6 million sq. ft. mission-critical facility that included an 84,000 sq. ft. data center and more than 175,000 sq. ft. of trading areas.

Mr. McCann became the Account Manager when JPMorgan elected to outsource their property management operations to Cushman & Wakefield in 1998. Mr. McCann oversaw both the Property and Project Management of this 5 million sq. ft. portfolio, which included properties in New York and Delaware. After the merger of JPMorgan and Chase Manhattan Bank in 2001, Mr. McCann took on additional responsibilities, including 270 Park Avenue, 1 and 2 Chase Manhattan Plaza, as well as all Chase Manhattan retail bank branches in Manhattan.

In addition to the previously described responsibilities, during his tenure at Cushman & Wakefield, Mr. McCann served as a Managing Director in their Asset Services division, where he provided oversight of several prestigious properties. Some of the properties that Mr. McCann was involved with include 1211 Avenue of the Americas, Time Inc. facilities in the United States, the New York Life Insurance Company portfolio, including New York Life’s headquarters building at 51 Madison Avenue, Pfizer World Headquarters at 235 East 42 Street, TIAA headquarters at 730 Third Avenue, Ford Foundation Building, United Nations Federal Credit Union headquarters in Long Island City, 650 Fifth Avenue, 425 Park Avenue, 505 Park Avenue, 366 Madison Avenue, and several Nuveen investment properties. Mr. McCann also oversaw the United Nations Development Corporation properties located at 1, 2, and 3 United Nations Plaza.

Prior to joining C&W, Mr. McCann was employed by Olympia & York, serving as Property Manager of 125 Broad Street, New York.

Mr. McCann is a graduate of St. John’s University and holds a Commercial Pilot license with an instrument rating. He served as a member of the Management Committee for the Real Estate Board of New York.
